Tillmans Corner traces to the 1840s as a farming and sawmilling settlement first known as Red Bank, later renamed for early landowner William J. Tillman; it grew into the largest census-designated place in Alabama without ever incorporating as its own city. Postwar decades of unincorporated growth left a housing stock spanning several building eras, all sitting on the same low coastal-plain terrain as the rest of Mobile County.
