Semmes is one of the youngest incorporated cities in the Mobile area -- voters approved incorporation in August 2010 and the city was officially declared in May 2011 -- after generations as an unincorporated timber and, later, nursery-trade community known for its azaleas. That late incorporation means Semmes never had a dense urban core; its housing spans rural homesteads to new subdivisions on large lots.
